VirtualRealPorn

Companies such as Naughty America or startup VirtualRealPorn have developed their own 180 or 360 degree camera arrays that produce pornography that can be watched using a VR headset. However, to be 100% clear, this is not really virtual reality, because your point of view is fixed within the scene. You can look around, but you can’t move your head up and down, side to side, or forward and backward. You’re stuck watching the scene from the camera array’s point of view. In the language of VR, what they lack is called “Positional Tracking.”

While these companies usually claim “immersion” into the scene, there is very little immersion in this experience for most people. That’s because you can’t see your own hands (or private parts) moving according to how your real body is moving, and for the vast majority of users, this breaks the feeling of “immersion/presence” that is the whole point of VR in the first place.

Here’s a sample of typical claims on their webpages:

“Have the Adult VR Experience You’ve Always Dreamed About!” – Hologirl VR
“Head Tracking – You can delight in the best bodies by moving your head in all directions with your headset” – VirtualRealPorn
“Today’s hottest adult stars are inside BaDoinkVR.com, performing in immersive VR for the very first time.”

3D movies are a step towards immersion, but are far from the immersive experience most companies are claiming. So while it’s not exactly the sexual version of Star Trek’s holodeck that users ultimately are hoping for, it can be a more immersive experience than a regular 3D porn movie.

The Future of VR Porn Movies

Judging by the comments on the Reddit “Oculus NSFW” page, most users are disappointed with what’s been produced so far, and there are endless comment streams from jaded users giving conflicting suggestions for improvement to the content creators. And, it seems that only a handful of them understand virtual reality and its current technical limitations, but that doesn’t stop them from thinking they know better how to produce immersive adult videos.

Of course, VR as a technology is still in diapers, and we can expect the tech to improve, but there are also technical restraints on the entire idea of VR sex that are no company is able to solve at this time, such as allowing a user to truly feel what he or she sees in the virtual world.

Some companies, such as VirtualRealPorn, have started to take baby steps toward “Feelies” where a user can get some sensation of being a participant by having what he sees match to the sensations. VRP, for example, is making some of their content compatible with the Lovense (http://www.lovense.com/vr-porn) or Kiiroo sex toys that synchronize visual with sensation to a limited extent. However, this is still very limited, and a user can’t move his or her head around the scene to change visual angles.

True VR Porn Movies

VR Porn movies that are more immersive and actually have positional tracking are possible only by rendering the scene on the fly. As of this writing, only a company called Holodexxx seems to be anywhere close to offering this type of Adult VR content. Holodexxx has scanned various porn stars, and with technology from high quality video game engines, plans to produce sex scenes that are true VR. And despite Holodexxx seemingly being the only one doing this, they’ve already stopped work on their product indefinitely, without much explanation.

However, with all adult content, most companies tend to promise a lot more than they actually deliver, so it remains to be seen what Holodexxx and others actually release. They plan to go far beyond just movies but have interactive content that could potentially be more immersive.

One thing for sure is that virtual porn has the potential to be a multi-billion dollar industry, and we can expect a lot more money to pour into research and development after companies such as this demonstrate the potential, and Oculus and others have actually start selling their high quality headsets.
