The Gear VR appears to have shaken the virtual reality market, when it comes to display technology for the headset. Instead of adding a built-in display, why not attach a phone or tablet to the headset, to work as the screen.

That is exactly what AirVR are trying to achieve, with a new Kickstarter focused on iOS users. The AirVR works with some iOS devices, allowing the startup to leverage the millions of customers already using iPhones and iPads.

The AirVR is a cheap virtual reality headset, this is due to all of the processing power coming from the iPhone or iPad. The headset will not have any plugs and will act as a frame and goggles, to attain the virtual reality experience.

It still means the user has to buy an iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Mini or iPad Mini with Retina Display to use the AirVR, but we are not talking about a few thousand people here. Apple has sold hundreds of millions of iPad Mini’s and we are sure to see millions of iPhone 6 Plus sales in 2014.

AirVR will offer their own application to mimic the virtual reality experience on iPad and iPhone. This is the first virtual reality headset to use iOS, we will have to wait and see if Apple allow this third party accessory to work on their OS.

This is the first real move into the phone and tablet market, the Gear VR might be successful, but that all depends on how many Galaxy Note 4 fans are also virtual reality fans, since Samsung has only got one compatible display at launch.

AirVR will ship in December 2014 and will have a store ready on January 2015, to make custom colored AirVR headsets.
