Climax’s Technical Director James Sharman has gave a few props to the Samsung Gear VR, the newest virtual reality headset on the market. Sharman’s team will be working on two new games for the Gear VR, coming in the next six months.

The first is an arcade shooter, based on World War 2 bombers, called Bandit Six. The shooter gives a cockpit view of the action, allowing players to fight off incoming jets, the user will tilt their head to look at incoming planes and bombers.

Their second game is still under wraps, Climax Studios is working with Oculus on the project and will wait for an official statement, before making any statements of their own.

Both of these games will run in the Unity Engine, offering a lot of presets and functions for virtual reality. The SDK for the Gear VR has been worked on in cooperation with Oculus and Sharman believes this greatly benefits the end product performance.

Gear VR is a superior experience, when compared to the first generation Oculus Rift, according to Sherman. The smartphone combined with the headset works as intended, as we have seen in early demos, and performance looks to be up to snuff.

Still, Samsung needs a big haul with the Galaxy Note 4 to be able to sell thousands of Gear VR units. The Gear VR headset relies on the Galaxy Note 4 as the primary display device and power source, allowing games and simulations to be played.

There are still questions surrounding the Gear VR and bringing mobile gaming into the VR space. Some purists want to see the Oculus and other VR headsets run from computers or consoles, not from a mobile that can only render so much, before heating up or switching off.
